Health Insurance for Cocoa Farmers in Ghana

With the belief that healthcare should be accessible and affordable for everyone, we joined the Ghana Healthcare Program at the beginning of 2022. Through this program, we pay for health insurance for the cocoa farmers and their families in the village of Nankese. This village is located in the first organic cocoa region of Ghana, Suhum, and consists of 213 residents.

Through our involvement in the Ghana Healthcare Program, we contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 1 "No Poverty" and Goal 3 "Good Health and Well-being."

Why is Health Insurance Necessary?

Health insurance is crucial to ensuring a livable income and preventing poverty. Cocoa farmers often have no savings, and unexpected medical expenses can lead to financial disaster. Poor health reduces productivity and crop yields, resulting in lower income and difficulties in paying for basic needs such as food.

Health insurance for cocoa farmers can reduce sick days and improve overall health, leading to higher productivity and better living conditions, helping to maintain a sustainable income. Moreover, it helps prevent child labor, as farmers remain financially capable of hiring workers during illness.

What Does the Health Insurance Cover?

Although Ghana has had a basic health insurance system through the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) since 2003, many healthcare costs remain uncovered, leading to low participation rates. These uncovered costs place a significant burden on the income of cocoa farmers.

The Ghana Healthcare Program combines the national basic health insurance with a private insurance plan, organized by Elucid Social. The basic insurance covers emergency care, maternity services, and minor surgeries but does not include expensive treatments like heart surgeries or medication for HIV or malaria. The private insurance covers these high-cost treatments and reimburses 80-100% of healthcare expenses for a cocoa farmer or a family member.

Digital Health Wallet

Through Elucid Social’s digital platform, the health insurance payments made by Cru de Cacao can be safely and directly transferred to the health fund. Farmers can easily submit their doctor or hospital bills via their mobile phones and immediately have access to a digital proof of insurance.

Additionally, they have access to the Digital Health Wallet, where they can save for potential out-of-pocket expenses during treatments. To encourage saving, the health fund doubles the amount saved by the farmers.

"I've always been loyal to the cooperative, but now I have even more reason to stay. The insurance has been a blessing for my children, covering their health needs and giving me peace of mind. Selling my cocoa here feels like the best decision for my family and me."
